About Liberty Leading the People

Commemorates the July Revolution of 1830 that toppled Charles X. Liberty is personified as Marianne, barefoot and bearing the tricolor. The boy with pistols was inspired by a real street fighter. The painting combines allegory with contemporary realism. Bought by the French government but hidden from public view for years as too inflammatory.
