About The Monk by the Sea
A tiny figure stands on a vast empty shore before an immense sky. The proportions are deliberately overwhelming. Almost the entire canvas is sky and sea. Friedrich strips landscape to its most elemental form. Contemporary viewers found it disturbing and empty.
