About The Burghers of Calais
Commemorates six citizens who offered their lives to save Calais during the Hundred Years War. Rodin wanted the figures at ground level, not on a pedestal. Each figure shows a different stage of accepting death. The original commission was controversial for not glorifying the sacrifice.
