About Whistlers Mother
Officially titled Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1. The model was Anna McNeill Whistler, his actual mother. She stood in when the original model failed to appear. Purchased by France in 1891, the first American painting in the Louvre. The frame was designed by Whistler himself. She was 67 when she posed.
